One such story is that of Eva Melnyk, a joyful 11-year-old girl who lived in a loving Christian family. Her life, like so many others, changed forever on February 22, 2022, when Russian forces invaded Ukraine.
Almost immediately, Eva’s father joined the defense forces, determined to protect his family and country. For months, Eva and her mother clung to the hope that they would soon see him again. But on October 13, their world was shattered—Eva’s father was killed in action. In an instant, this bright little girl lost her father, and the life she knew was replaced with unimaginable grief.
Eva’s once happy days became filled with pain, watching her mother weep and dealing with the overwhelming loss in her own heart. Her father’s loving voice, once a constant comfort, would never be heard again.
But your compassion helped make a difference. Because of your support, Eva was able to attend a special rehabilitation camp, “The Chosen,” organized for children affected by the war. This camp, located in Turya, Ukraine, provided a safe space for Eva and others like her to heal emotionally. When Eva first arrived, she would cry whenever she heard the word “father.” Yet, through the loving care of camp staff and the companionship of other children, she slowly began to heal. While her heart still carries the deep scars of loss, today she smiles more easily, and her eyes reflect a growing sense of hope.
Eva’s mother, who endured the unimaginable pain of losing her husband, is now using her own experience to help others. She works in Dnipropetrovsk, supporting women who have lost their husbands in the war, offering them the strength and empathy only someone who has walked the same path can provide. This, too, is a story of hope—of finding purpose through pain.
Thanks to your donations, Eva’s life has been touched. She is finding the courage to move forward, and her mother has found strength in helping others do the same. This wouldn’t have been possible without your generosity.
