Healing Camp for Ukrainian Children: How Varya Found Her Voice Again

At a healing camp for Ukrainian children in Western Ukraine, something remarkable happened. A girl named Varya — whose life had been deeply affected by war — picked up a guitar and played a song. It was the first time she opened up since her mother, a military medic, left for the frontlines. That moment of music became a moment of healing.

This camp, hosted by Helping Ukraine US and Ukrainian partner ДоброДій Foundation, provided a safe, caring environment for 60 children of war — kids who have lost parents, homes, or peace of mind.

A Healing Camp Designed for Children Affected by War

Held from June 14–24 in the village of Hrymailiv, this healing camp for Ukrainian children offered more than just a break from reality. It offered psychological support, creative expression, connection, and the chance to be children again.

Participants included:

  • Children of fallen or active soldiers

  • Kids from de-occupied areas

  • Children who endured shelling, trauma, or separation from loved ones

Led by 20 trauma-trained volunteers, the camp offered art therapy, team games, music sessions, and quiet time for emotional healing. It was a chance for these kids to smile, connect, and begin building trust again.

Varya’s Story: From Control to Connection

Varya arrived guarded and strong-willed. Her mother serves on the front lines, and Varya now lives with her grandmother. Used to fending for herself, she struggled to connect with others.

At first, she tried to lead and control, withdrawing when things didn’t go her way. But slowly, through compassionate guidance and positive peer connection, she began to soften.

One night, surrounded by friends, Varya picked up a guitar. Her song — simple, deep, and full of feeling — revealed the child behind the walls. That moment reminded us: healing is possible, even after trauma.
