Day 9: Support Ukrainian Hospitals in Kyiv

Supporting Ukrainian Doctors on the Frontlines: Visit to Kyiv’s City Hospital No. 12
June 12, 2025 – Kyiv, Ukraine

Support Ukrainian hospitals is more critical than ever. Yesterday, I visited City Hospital No. 12 in Kyiv with Olga Gorman as part of our humanitarian mission to support Ukraine. We met with Dr. Oleksandr Kosyakov, head of the traumatology department and a dedicated member of Rotary Club Kyiv. What we saw was both humbling and urgent: doctors working tirelessly to save lives with severely limited resources.

Surgical Drills Saving Lives — and Wearing Out Fast

In June 2022, we helped deliver surgical drills to this hospital — tools that have become essential for trauma and orthopedic surgeries. As Dr. Oleksandr Kosyakov explained, these drills are used four days a week. They undergo intense sterilization and are pushed to their limits during emergency procedures. That’s why they don’t last long.

The challenge? Replacing them is nearly impossible. These life-saving tools are incredibly expensive, and for a public hospital in a nation at war, there simply isn’t room in the budget. But still, the doctors persevere. They show up. They operate. They save lives. They don’t stop.

Why We Must Support Ukrainian Hospitals Now

This visit reminded us that supporting Ukrainian hospitals and their medical professionals is essential. These doctors are true frontline heroes. Their work is physically and emotionally taxing — and they need better tools to save lives.

We were honored to stand beside fellow Rotarians from Kyiv, including PDG Serhiy Zavadskyi, reaffirming our shared commitment to humanitarian service. This is what Rotary International stands for: showing up when it matters most.
